What is Species?
Species comes from the latin species and it is the rank of biological classification ranked under genus, defined as the largest group of organisms capable of interbreeding a producing offsprings. Species have same ancestry, and are compared on physical attributes as well as DNA sequence where available. In the earliest days, a species was simply a group of nearly identical organisms, currently scientific understanding of species say that there is no way to distinguish between different species in all cases so biologists continue to seek concrete ways to operationalize the idea.
Meet the Okapia johnstoniThe name of this species is Okapia johnstoni, however it is more commonly knows as Okapi. It is a species whose population is decreasing. They are solitary for the most part, and were even thought to be nocturnal at one point. They feed on leaves, grasses, fruits, and even poisonous fungi. They are also known for eating the charcoal from burned forest trees. After giving birth, Okapi mothers will remain close to their young and use infrasonic communication to communicate with their calves. This sound is below the range of human hearing.
